GRAI-96

Global Returnable Asset Identifier (96-bit)

urn:epc:id:grai
Header: 0x3396 bits

What is GRAI-96?

Identifies a returnable asset - reusable containers, pallets, kegs, crates, trolleys, and rail cars. The GRAI includes an asset type and a serial number so each individual asset can be tracked across its lifecycle.

Used for: Reusable pallets, beer kegs, gas cylinders, rail freight cars, reusable totes in manufacturing.

Field layout

The first 8 bits are always the header (0x33 = 51 decimal), which identifies this as GRAI-96. The partition field determines how bits are divided between the company prefix and the following reference field - see the partition table below.

Defined in GS1 EPC Tag Data Standard v2.3, Section 7.6 (Global Returnable Asset Identifier), encoding procedure in Section 14.6.4.

BitsFieldDescription
0–7Header0x33 (51) - identifies this encoding as GRAI-96
8–10FilterFilter 1 = rail vehicle. Most others reserved for future use.
11–13PartitionSplits bits between company prefix and asset type.
14–53Company PrefixGS1 Company Prefix of the asset owner.
54–57Asset TypeIdentifies the type of asset. Size varies by partition.
58–95Serial Number38-bit numeric serial number for this individual asset.

Filter values

The 3-bit filter field does not affect identity - it tells readers what packaging level or category the tag is applied to. The same item with different filter values has the same Pure Identity URI.

Partition table

The 3-bit partition value determines how the fixed bit space is divided between the company prefix and the following reference field. GS1 company prefixes vary in length (6–12 digits), so the partition tells the decoder where one field ends and the next begins.
