Overview

The international specification for machine-readable travel documents (MRTDs) including e-passports, visas, and ID cards. Part 10–12 define the contactless chip interface using ISO 14443, the logical data structure (LDS) storing biometric data (facial image, fingerprints), and the security mechanisms (Basic Access Control, Passive/Active Authentication, Extended Access Control).

Why it matters for RFID

Every e-passport in the world uses an HF RFID chip conforming to this specification. ICAO 9303 defines what data is stored on the chip and how border control readers authenticate and read it.
