Overview

Defines proximity contactless smart cards operating at 13.56 MHz with a read range of up to ~10 cm. Split into four parts covering physical characteristics, radio interface (Type A and Type B), initialization and anti-collision, and transmission protocol. Used by payment cards (Visa payWave, Mastercard PayPass), passports (ICAO 9303), and access badges.

Why it matters for RFID

The standard behind contactless payment (NFC payments), e-passports, and many access control cards. NFC devices are compatible with ISO 14443 tags.
