Drone-mounted reader
Specialty
What is it?
A drone-mounted RFID reader is a lightweight UHF reader and antenna payload that attaches to a commercial drone, enabling autonomous aerial inventory counts in large warehouses, distribution centres, and outdoor yards. The drone flies pre-programmed routes along rack aisles or yard rows, reading pallet and item tags at each location. What would take a team of workers with handheld readers days to count, a drone can scan in hours - including the top rack levels that are inaccessible without a lift.
How it works
An OEM reader module and a compact downward- or sideways-facing antenna are mounted in the drone payload bay. The drone follows a pre-programmed waypoint route along warehouse aisles, hovering at each rack bay long enough to read all tags at that location. The reader streams tag data over WiFi to a ground station or edge server that correlates each read with the drone GPS or indoor positioning coordinates. Flight planning software maps the warehouse layout and generates optimal flight paths. Safety systems (obstacle avoidance, geofencing, auto-return on low battery) ensure safe operation around people and infrastructure.
Industries
Use cases
- Autonomous warehouse inventory counts
- High-bay rack scanning without lifts
- Outdoor yard and container inventory
- Cycle counting on scheduled drone flights
- Locating misplaced pallets in large facilities
Pros
- Scans inaccessible high racks without lifts or scaffolding
- Dramatically faster than manual counting in large facilities
- Autonomous operation - no human in the aisle
- Consistent, repeatable flight paths for regular cycle counts
- Can operate outside working hours to avoid disruption
Cons
- Battery life limits flight time to 20–40 minutes
- Indoor GPS is unreliable - requires separate positioning system
- Regulatory restrictions on indoor drone operation in some regions
- Metal racking can cause RF multipath interference
- High upfront investment for drone, reader, and positioning infrastructure
