What is it?

Overhead readers mount on ceilings or overhead structures to create wide read zones covering aisles, checkout areas, or open floor spaces below. They are the readers behind store-wide RFID inventory - scanning everything on the sales floor from above without visible infrastructure. Integrated-antenna models look like a ceiling tile or smoke detector, while multi-port models drive separate antennas aimed at specific zones.

How it works

Mounted at ceiling height (typically 3–5 m), the reader broadcasts a downward-facing interrogation field. Tags on shelves, racks, or passing carts below respond with their EPC data. The reader uses beamforming or sector-antenna switching to cover a wide area while maintaining read accuracy. Some models include a secondary Bluetooth LE radio to receive location beacons or to communicate with mobile devices for configuration. Because the reader looks straight down, it avoids the stray-read problems common with horizontal read zones - a tag must be physically below the reader to be counted.

Use cases

  • Store-wide perpetual inventory counts
  • Real-time location of tagged assets
  • Automated shelf replenishment triggers
  • Library book tracking across floors
  • Waiting room or event space occupancy monitoring

Pros

  • Covers large floor area from a single mount point
  • No visible infrastructure at ground level
  • Downward read pattern reduces stray reads
  • PoE simplifies cabling
  • Some models blend into ceiling aesthetics

Cons

  • Ceiling height limits read reliability on small tags
  • Installation requires overhead access and structured cabling
  • Read density drops at the edges of the coverage cone
  • Indoor only - not weatherproof
  • Higher per-unit cost than portal readers for equivalent coverage
