What is it?

A forklift-mounted reader attaches to the overhead guard or mast of a forklift truck, reading pallet tags as the driver picks, moves, and drops loads. The driver does not need to stop and scan - the reader automatically identifies each pallet as the forks engage it. Combined with location beacons or warehouse zone antennas, forklift readers can track both the pallet identity and its storage location in real time, eliminating put-away and retrieval errors.

How it works

The reader is mounted on the forklift overhead guard in a vibration-dampened enclosure. Antennas are positioned on the mast cross-beam pointing forward and downward toward the pallet face. When the forks approach a pallet, the antenna reads the pallet tag at close range. The reader connects via WiFi to the warehouse management system, reporting each pallet ID along with a timestamp. Some systems add floor-embedded or ceiling-mounted location tags that the forklift reader also detects, providing X-Y position data for the put-away location. A vehicle-mount terminal on the dash displays pick/put instructions to the driver.

Use cases

  • Automatic pallet identification on pick-up
  • Guided put-away - directing drivers to correct locations
  • Real-time pallet tracking through the warehouse
  • Dock-to-stock cycle time measurement
  • Proof-of-delivery at customer sites

Pros

  • Zero-scan workflow - driver never stops to scan
  • Reads pallet tags automatically on fork engagement
  • Tracks pallet location when combined with location infrastructure
  • Ruggedised for vibration, dust, and temperature extremes
  • Integrates with existing WMS via WiFi

Cons

  • Installation must withstand constant vibration
  • Antenna alignment is critical and can shift over time
  • Forklift electrical systems can introduce RF noise
  • Requires WiFi coverage across the entire warehouse
  • Higher total cost when including antennas, mount, and vehicle terminal
