Handheld gun reader
Handheld / mobile
What is it?
The handheld gun reader is the RFID equivalent of the barcode scanner gun - a rugged pistol-grip device with an integrated UHF antenna that workers aim at tagged items to read or locate them. Unlike barcode scanners, one pull of the trigger can read every tag in the beam path, making cycle counts, search-and-find, and receiving operations dramatically faster. Most models run Android and function as a full mobile computer with a touchscreen, camera, and barcode scanner alongside the RFID reader.
How it works
The pistol grip houses a circular polarised antenna that emits a focused beam of UHF energy when the trigger is pressed. The integrated reader module singulates all tags within the beam using EPC Gen2 anti-collision protocols. An audible beep or haptic feedback confirms each read. The device runs warehouse or inventory applications on its Android OS, communicating with backend systems over WiFi or cellular. Most models include a geiger-counter mode that increases beep frequency as the reader gets closer to a target tag - essential for finding a specific item in a large warehouse.
