Mobile sled reader
Handheld / mobile
What is it?
A mobile sled turns an existing smartphone or tablet into a UHF RFID reader. The sled clips onto the back of a phone or connects via a grip case, adding a compact RFID antenna and reader module. Workers use their familiar mobile device and existing apps with RFID capability added on. Sleds are the fastest way to deploy RFID reading without buying dedicated rugged devices - ideal for pilots, seasonal workers, or organisations that want to use consumer hardware.
How it works
The sled contains a miniaturised UHF reader module and a small linear or circular-polarised antenna. It communicates with the host smartphone over Bluetooth or a direct USB/Lightning connection. An SDK (typically iOS and Android) allows any mobile app to trigger reads, receive tag data, and control reader settings. The phone handles the UI, connectivity, and processing while the sled handles the RF. Most sleds have their own battery so they do not drain the phone, and a trigger button on the sled grip for one-handed operation.
