Wearable ring scanner
Handheld / mobile
What is it?
A wearable ring scanner is a finger-mounted RFID reader that leaves both hands free for picking, packing, and handling items. The reader sits on one or two fingers like a ring, with a small trigger operated by the thumb. Some models have a separate wrist-mounted battery and processing unit connected by a cable to the ring. Ring scanners are most popular in high-speed order picking where workers need to scan and grab items simultaneously.
How it works
The ring contains a miniaturised RFID reader module and a tiny antenna. When triggered, it reads tags at close range - ideal for item-level identification during picking. The ring connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone, wrist-mounted terminal, or warehouse management system. Because the antenna is small, read range is deliberately short to ensure only the intended item is read. Some models combine RFID with a laser barcode scanner for mixed workflows.
Industries

- Faster than picking up and putting down a gun scanner
- Lightweight (30–60 g)
- Short read range prevents accidental reads
- Ergonomic for repetitive scanning tasks
Cons
- Very short read range - unsuitable for bulk reads
- Battery life is limited by small form factor (4–8 hours)
- Finger sizing and comfort vary by worker
- Higher cost per read-range-metre than any other form factor
- Limited to single-item scanning workflows
