Anti-theft / EAS hard tag
Hard tags
What is it?
Anti-theft hard tags are the plastic security tags clamped to garments in retail stores. Modern versions combine traditional Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) with UHF RFID, providing both theft deterrence (the EAS alarm gate) and inventory visibility (the RFID chip). The tag is attached with a pin or lanyard and removed at the point of sale with a detacher tool.
How it works
The tag housing contains two systems: an EAS element (either an RF resonant circuit at 8.2 MHz or an acousto-magnetic strip at 58 kHz) and a UHF RFID transponder. The EAS system triggers alarm pedestals at store exits if the tag is not removed or deactivated. The UHF RFID system carries the item's SGTIN and enables inventory counts, omnichannel fulfilment, and self-checkout. Tags are attached with a steel pin that requires a magnetic or mechanical detacher to remove.
Use cases
- Apparel retail loss prevention
- Electronics and high-value merchandise
- Self-checkout verification
- RFID-enabled inventory + loss prevention
- Department store security
- Sporting goods and fashion retail
Pros
- Dual function: theft deterrence + inventory management
- Reusable – attached and removed thousands of times
- Strong visual deterrent to shoplifting
- Ink or dye options for additional deterrence
- Compatible with existing EAS infrastructure
Cons
- Must be removed at point of sale (adds transaction time)
- Tags occasionally left on at checkout (customer frustration)
- High initial cost for tags and detacher equipment
- Sophisticated shoplifters can defeat mechanical locks
- Cannot be used on all product types (delicate items)
